Eminem and teen idol Justin Bieber dominated the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, winning six awards each with the 38-year-old rapper taking the top honor for artist of the year. (Reauters) Eminem won awards in the following categories: Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Song and Top Rap Album. The brightest stars in music descended upon the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday night (May 22) as the Billboard Music Awards.
Eminem won “Top Artist of the Year”, “Taylor Swift won Top Album Artist of the Year”, Rihanna won two awards of “Top Female Artist of the Year” and “Radio Artist of the Year” at 2011 Billboard Music Awards. Taylor Swift said “I used to watch the Billboard Music Awards and see my heroes like Shania Twain and Faith Hill win this”.
Sporting his now short, spiky hair and a sparkling gold tuxedo jacket, Bieber beat singer Bruno Mars and rapper Nicki Minaj for best new artist. There was a six-way tie for second place between Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Usher, Taylor Swift, Mumford & Sons and Taio Cruz, who each won three trophies. Beyoncé, who rocked the stage with a fierce performance of “Run the World (Girls),” took home the Millennium Award and thanked her hubby, Jay-Z.
Katy Perry won awards for top hot 100 artist and top digital songs, while British singer-songwriter Taio Cruz won the top hot 100 song of the year for his hit, “Dynamite.” Justin then rejoined Selena at the candle-lit table and they sat cosily in the booth to watch the rest of the show. Billboard has confirmed that the two pop singers will be presenters at the 2011 Billboard Music Awards.
This is the first year that ABC broadcasted the event and marks the first Billboard Music Awards show since 2007. “Never Say Never” star was spotted back in the arms of girlfriend Selena Gomez last night as the couple took in an intimate concert in Costa Mesa, California.
