The US Geological Survey initially measured the quake at magnitude 7.8 and at a depth of just one kilometre beneath the Pacific seabed. On Thursday, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake on New Zealand’s lower North Island. The quake, which struck at 3.36pm, was centred 150km deep, 30km west of Taupo.
